Based on the humorous writings of author Jean Shepherd, this beloved holiday movie follows the wintry exploits of youngster Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), who spends most of his time dodging a bully (Zack Ward) and dreaming of his ideal Christmas gift, a “Red Ryder air rifle.” Frequently at odds with his cranky dad (Darren McGavin) but comforted by his doting mother (Melinda Dillon), Ralphie struggles to make it to Christmas Day with his glasses and his hopes intact.

Winner winner Christmas duck dinner! Ah… yes. When that time comes around you’ll know it just by turning on your television. A Christmas Story has been a relished tradition in many a household, maybe almost as much or more than (I KNOW, I dare to state it) It’s a Wonderful Life. Even taking on a live stage version for TV this last year, that I heard was a hit. It does pack a powerful hilarity, but also a few valuable messages. Perhaps that’s why we love it so dearly? We love a good lesson, but we want to laugh along the journey. This does the job quite well. My mother never really cared for it, so it wasn’t a Christmas staple of mine, but I can see why it is a legend.

Without Jean Shepherd’s well-crafted narration it would not be the same movie. Having Ralphie’s thoughts leading the way is partly why it’s so brilliant. You’re getting a feel for this family, but really through the mind of this child. My favorite pieces are his cut-out fantasies. They are so hilarious and exaggerated to the point of inflation. They really do give you a fitting idea of this child’s mindset.

The screenplay couldn’t be better. All lines seem just right and the cast really delivered. I really love the nostalgia of the 40’s. It truly helps with the immersion into the story. I hope later generations carry this viewing tradition forward into the future so that they know just what happens when you ask for a Red Ryder BB Carbon Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle for Christmas.
