So…. my friends, you might be a little sad to hear my POV on this one, but my answer is “no”, very sadly, no it was not. Having said that feels rather good. I try to tell the truth, even if it hurts. As you can tell, it’s been a bit from when it came out and I saw it opening weekend. I’ve been putting this off, because I hate to gab on the depressing, but it bares telling.

Number one. I LOVED the first one. I saw it 5 times in theaters as I grabbed everyone I knew that hadn’t seen it. It was new, hilarious, and just done right. I had super high hopes that this one would be as great, but I believe it fell short and really underestimated the target. The jokes where extremely redundant, they just kept rapidly firing off like it was the point of the whole thing. It wasn’t. I laughed, but not on all cylinders like I intended. The comedic sharpness of the first one just didn’t transcend. The plot line was almost too much. The complexity of the first made it far easier to get by, but it was the intro. Hard to top.

Another not so terrible downer, but kind of meh was it’s tendency to leave the brain power behind. I’m not always ready to watch intelligent content, but the older I get the more I crave smart watches. This wasn’t totally brain-dead in it’s way, but it just seemed overcompensated with dumb comeback dialogue and irrational actions that just frustrate those that lust for common sense at least part of the time. Don’t get me wrong. I love the over-the-top characterizations from the first, but it kind of made this one try extra hard to re-capture that.
The saving grace for me was mini Groot, which was adorable on so many fronts when not over done. I also enjoyed some of the enemies from the first changing the script in this one. I’ll go no further only to say that I can’t wait for the meshing of the Marvel Universe for the Guardians. I’m sure it will more than make up for all the things.
