Based on the popular Japanese Manga, this action sci-fi takes you to the near future where the lovely Scarlett Johansson becomes a cyborg to stop dangerous criminals and new bigger threats. She also strives to know more on her backstory. Sounds thrilling right? Well, critics and audiences abroad drudge on it stating that the story is redundant and that the focus is not where it should be.

DreamWorks animation give us the voices of Alec Baldwin playing an unusual baby that is cognitively years beyond his physical features and tells of the impact his arrival has on a family told from the perspective of a 7-year-old. Sounds outrageously cute/hilarious right? Well… again audiences and critics abroad say that it’s premise is overshot and it’s so full of too much potty humor. Nope!
Enjoy suspenseful domestic thrillers? UNFORGETTABLE might be up your alley.
Katherine Heigl and Rosario Dawson are unsuspecting actresses in such a film. It’s the step-mother/new family story where the ex seeks revenge on the new wife, Heigl playing the crazy psycho ex. The formula has been done before, but this cast intrigues me. Too bad it didn’t intrigue everyone else as the reviews are really really bad. Critics say that it’s flash in a pan instead of unforgettable. I would say I’m surprised, but that’s what these type tend to be.
GIFTED, the heartfelt drama, might be the saving grace of releases this week.
Chris Evans (wait there’s more.. ha) is raising a smart little girl on his own. Best laid plans don’t entirely work out and threats of breaking their companionship are on the rise. Another great in the cast is Octavia Spenser who never fails and usually doesn’t pick duds to be a part of. Audiences abroad applaud the film giving it high marks in performances helping it’s predicable script. It’s not my usual pick, but might be nice for a family watch.
Can’t get enough drama and suspense? BLACK BUTTERFLY might do the trick.
In a mountain town, Antonio Bandaras, living alone, as a struggling writer decides he wouldn’t mind the company and lets a drifter (John Rhys Meyers) in. Bad choice Antonio! Audiences weren’t impressed saying that it lacks common sense. If anything drives me mad it’s a thriller or horror that has far too many dumb decisions.
Rather watch a documentary? FACING DARKNESS might be what you want.
It was a one time Fathom Event shown nationwide about how Samaritan’s Purse stepped up to provide aid to the Ebola epidemic in Africa. The president of the organization talks about the struggles faced, mission undertaking, and about the workers lives as they came to grips. It doesn’t really have much critic feedback, but audiences where impressed with it’s coverage. I’m thinking this might be one for me!

This one takes place in China right before WWII, based on a best selling novel, it follows a Wing Chun practitioner’s journey to pass down the art to others by opening a school. Of course there is a challenge before all can go as planned. Sounds interesting and I’ll probably have to see it at my BF’s request. Luckily positive consensus is high that it’s fight scenes are great and that it’s easy to enjoy.
